Pain itself
Pain itself is not something anyone loves, seeks, or wants to experience simply because it is pain. Sometimes, however, circumstances arise in which effort and pain can bring great pleasure. Who among us undertakes strenuous exercise except to gain some benefit from it? But who could rightly blame someone for choosing a pleasure with no unpleasant consequences, or for avoiding a pain that brings no pleasure? On the other hand, we condemn those who are so blinded by desire that they cannot foresee the suffering and trouble that will follow. The same fault lies with those who abandon their duties because of weakness of will, rather than through choice.
